Domain
Security
You need to be aware of domain security (safety) issues
that are important. One of the most prevalent of all
concerns is making sure you do not receive fraudulent
communication messages by way of your DNS server. You
need to be careful and you need to protect yourself.
Your name servers (DNS servers) are not the only thing
that needs to be protected. All your website files and
computer files should be protected as well.
Simple Ways To Protect Yourself
One of the most useful tips regarding the protection of
your domain name and all your servers is the use of a
system of securing everything properly. Some of the tips
to remember when attempting to secure domain servers
would be one or more of the following:
• If possible set yourself up for local logon
capabilities.
• Allow your computer to be accessed from a secure
network.
• Test your domain system before you launch it to the
public.
• Have channel data electronically encrypted or
digitally signed.
• Do not allow anonymous SAMS accounts and shares
numbering systems.
• Chance the “Let Everyone” permissions to apply to
anonymous users (which you may or may not even allow
anyway.
The above settings as well as others not mentioned are
located in your windows control panel. They are listed
under the “Security Options” under the “Local Policies”
Section of Windows Security Settings. Refer to your
Windows operating guide for more information. There are
other safety tips that you can apply as well. For
instance, you may want to block unwanted communication
that you receive from other DNS servers that you do not
trust.
You can identify any DNS intruders when you do a simple
reverse DNS lookup, or regular DNS lookup. This will
help you pinpoint which IP addresses are being
generated, and whether or not an attempt is being made
to steal your domain. Once you have identified any
problems with someone trying to intrude on your DNS
system you then can take action. For instance, some
people will install DNS spam filters in order to
eliminate this problem.
Another major problem you may want to be aware of is
that of cyber squatting, which is the stealing of a
domain name. There are ways you can possibly prevent
this, such as using a proxy IP address, which is one
that represents you but is not exactly you.
The more profitable and popular your site becomes the
more you need to be aware of domain safety (security)
issues. It is important for you to stay posted from time
to time.
